Artist Biography
Allen C. Smith began his professional art career as curator of a small city art museum, followed by years in commercial gallery and arts services management. In the past few years, his drawings have been included in a dozen or so invitational exhibitions, and selected for inclusion in significant national and regional juried exhibitions.
Smith received an Artists Crossroads grant (New York State Council on the Arts) for an art performance/mural project in 2004 and was a featured performance artist at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery’s Gusto at the Gallery in 2005. Similar performances were made for the Arnot Art Museum, the ARTS of the Southern Finger Lakes and the Corning Museum of Glass.
In May 2008 Smith completed a fresh body of work for an exhibition at 171 Cedar Arts Center in Corning, New York. This featured his largest graphite drawings to date, including a five by nine foot triptych, an eight-foot circular drawing on panel and an eight-foot tall, double-sided drawing.
2009 has renewed the artist’s passion for paint. New works in watercolor have been his primary interest. The year began with a group exhibition at Exhibit A in Corning. Works were included in juried exhibitions in Elmira, Ithaca, Rochester and Hammondsport, NY.
